At times, there may be certain viruses used as vectors as they can deliver the new gene by infecting the cell. The viruses are modified such that they are harmless for patients. Retrovirus is one such virus that integrates the genetic material into a chromosome in the human cell. While adenovirus introduces DNA into the nucleus of the cell but does not integrate it with chromosome.
The hair expert or dermatologist can either inject the vector in the patient’s scalp or can supply it intravenously through IV into specific cell tissues in the body. Another method is to take up a sample of the patient’s cell and expose it to the vector in a laboratory. The cells containing vector are thereafter, returned to the patient. If the treatment works, the new gene created by the vector will create a functioning protein. Gene therapy has faced many technical challenges and is not yet so popular. However, researches are made to overcome the loopholes and make it a potential future hair loss treatment.
